KSA #11: Assessments

Formative Assessments
Frayer Model Diagrams Assessment of Prior KnowledgeFormative assessment is a great tool to use to assess students' prior knowledge. One of the strategies I used during one of my practicum's was to do an assessment of prior knowledge as a formative assessment. Below are some pictures of Frayer Model Diagrams that I created with my students to assess their familiarity with vocabulary used in the Grade 9: Solving Linear Equations. It was a great way to not only assess their prior knowledge, but to then go over with the students what the vocabulary terms are and where we would use them. Thus, it ended up with an assessment for and as learning.

Photo Walk for Assessment of Prior KnowledgeHere we did a photo walk of different structures from around the world. The students were given 3 sticky notes to put on the photos, and they used an OWL structure (Observe, Wonder, and Link) for each sticky; something I observed, something I am wondering about, and how can I link this to my life. The students enjoyed this alot, and afterwards we took another set of the photos and sorted them as many different ways we could (man made structures, natural structures, structures made of metal, structures made of wood, etc.)

Self and Peer AssessmentOne of my favorite tools to use during writing is peer and self editing. This is a picture of the self and peer assessments for learning that I used for my students to edit their stories that we had written during a fairy tale unit. Each student was given the self assessment first, and then asked to trade their work with a partner. I emphasized that the most important part of the peer editing was the "I wish.." section that allowed for the students to give each other formative feedback on their fairy tales.
