KSA #13: Home and Community Resources
Lowe's In-Class Field Trip
During my PS3 practicum, our class had been a part of an Engineering Design Challenge. For our project, I wanted to have the students actually able to use building materials and create something, rather than having them only use cardboard and other donated materials. Thankfully, I was able to get into contact with Lowe's Hardware Store and they were able to bring building kits and materials to our school to help our students build bird houses, planters, and haunted houses.
Below are a few pictures of our students getting their hands dirty! |
Director of Tutoring Services
As Director of Tutoring Services, it was my responsibility to provide the community with an affordable, dependable, and reliable tutoring service for the students around Lethbridge. Many of the tutoring services around Lethbridge are extremely expensive, especially to young families or families who are struggling. As a non-profit organization, we wanted to create a service that benefitted both our tutors and our parents. Thus, we initiated a program that asked for parents to pay a yearly fee of $25 to have access to our services, and this fee went to a scholarship for 3 of our tutors every year. Additionally, parents paid the tutors between $15 - $20 per hour, which is less than half of cheapest tutoring service in Lethbridge. This rate was also an incentive for our tutors because this rate was paid completely to them; the EUS received no profit from this program.
Additionally, as Tutoring Director I created a new poster to distribute to schools around Lethbridge and to inform teachers and parents about our tutoring program. We visited schools individually to explain our program to parents and teachers, and to show them the benefits of using our tutoring program as a resource.
I also created a bank of resources for our tutors to use during their tutoring sessions. This included links to past diploma exams, notes and examples for different units, potential ideas for struggling areas, etc. This bank was public on our website, and anyone could use it (not just our tutors).
